Burn Out And Our Health
Sep 09, 2024Who here hasn't felt underappreciated, overwhelmed, overworked, and quite frankly ready to quit some days at their job?! And it seems this sentiment is stronger than ever, especially in certain fields like finance, medicine, and education, to name a few. But no one is immune, and burnout can happen to anyone and everyone. Stay-at-home moms? Yep! Entry-level positions? Sure! High-level execs? You bet!
So, what is burnout, and why does it happen?
Burnout is more than just feeling stressed or tired. It has three main components: detachment, depersonalization, and depletion.
Detachment means feeling disconnected from your work or the people around you. You might feel like you’re just going through the motions rather than really being involved.
Depersonalization happens when you start seeing people, including yourself, as objects or problems, not as individuals with feelings. It’s like you’re on autopilot and stop caring about personal connections.
Depletion is when you feel completely drained and exhausted, both mentally and physically. This isn’t just a temporary feeling; it can start to take over your whole life, making everything seem hard and overwhelming.
Burnout doesn’t just affect your work life, it can spill over into your personal life and home life, making everything seem unbearable. On top of the emotional struggles, burnout can also lead to physical issues like headaches, feeling tired all the time, poor sleep, and bowel issues.
Understanding what burnout is and why it happens can be the first step in tackling it and finding ways to get back on track.
When we’re burned out, we can’t be our best selves, and this affects everyone around us—our patients, clients, and loved ones. Burnout makes us withdraw from things we love, like our families and hobbies. When skilled, smart, and hardworking people leave their jobs because of burnout, we all lose out. These are the people who make a difference in their work and in our lives. Their absence means we miss out on their knowledge and care!
Dealing with burnout is important not just for our own health but for everyone who benefits from our work and support. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by burnout, there’s hope! The first step is to pause—both literally and figuratively. Take a few deep breaths and truly acknowledge how you’re feeling. Then, come up with a plan that puts self-care and your mental health first.
Find an activity you love and make sure it’s a must-do for you. It could be a daily walk outside or a yoga class. This helps you reconnect with yourself through healthy movement. For many people, talking to a doctor or therapist can also be really helpful. Setting clear boundaries on your time is important too. Don’t start your day by checking work emails or social media. Begin with something that feels productive and meaningful for you!
If you're a manager or lead a team, keeping an eye on their well-being is really important to help prevent burnout. Sometimes, a simple gesture can make a huge difference. Send a personal note or offer a genuine thank you to let your team know you truly appreciate their hard work. Also, be sure to respect their time off. Encourage them to fully unplug on weekends and after work hours. This break helps them recharge and come back to work with fresh energy and a positive attitude. Creating a supportive environment where your team feels valued and has a good work-life balance not only helps prevent burnout but also makes the workplace more enjoyable for everyone.
As our world gets more tech-savvy, you might find that instead of freeing us up, technology often just adds to our busyness! But here’s the thing—being busy doesn’t always mean being productive. When you’re feeling overwhelmed and drained, it’s a sign to take a step back and reassess things.
Living in constant stress with high cortisol levels and inflammation can seriously impact both your physical and mental health. So, if you’re feeling swamped, it’s time to take a step back, breathe, and find a better balance. Your well-being deserves it!
